I'm glad you were able to convey what I was trying to say in that little Twitter box! If you possess subject matter expertise, that knowledge was earned through your risks, effort, contacts, and sacrifices. It needs to remain portable so that it transfers with you whereever you go. It's to an employer's benefit to have you onboard as a SME but when that relationship ends, in reality the expertise is traveling elsewhere with you - not magically staying behind on your old desk.

I wouldn't over-obsess about a "personal brand". I'm not saying that it's not important, but if you concentrate more on providing value to those who follow/read/befriend you, it won't matter as much if you lose it or are forced to "re-brand" yourself.

Sure, people remember clever names and social media profiles take TONS of time to build, but if you've done your job, people will follow the person behind the name, not the name.

1) Claim your name on the top social networks

2) Monitor social media for mentions of your name and respond

Some great tips!

"Watch what you say. Much like drunk dialing, you can’t take back something blogged or tweeted in anger. Your tweets will still show up in Twitter search, and the Google cache lives on."

If people just watched what they said, half the reputation problems would go away. ;-)

Thanks for including my advice.
